The Ahuriri Estuary Restoration Group is a group of Department of Conservation volunteers who carry out weed control around the Ahuriri Estuary in Napier.
The group meets at the carpark at the end of Humber Street, Ahuriri, Napier, on the first Thursday of the month (apart from January) and usually work from 8.30am - 12 noon when working around the lower estuary. After a discussion about the work for the day and the Health & Safety briefing the group then travels to whichever area of the estuary will be worked that day.
Occasionally the group travels to the upper estuary and other reserves in Hawke's Bay to work on problem weeds. When working away from the estuary we usually work for the full day.
For our November working day we will be meeting at Humber Street, Ahuriri, as usual and then carpooling to travel to the Elsthorpe Scenic Reserve in Central Hawke's Bay, Kairakau Road block, to remove weeds that have appeared in the reserve following the cyclone.
At times the group are also involved with native planting around the estuary however access to some of these areas at present has been impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle.
There is no requirement to attend each month, just when it works for you but we would love some new members.
Someone who cares about the environment and is looking to join a group of dedicated volunteers. A reasonable level of fitness as most volunteer days involve physical work.
