Dads N Books Volunteers

Join us in this meaningful programme to assist a small group of men in prison as they write and illustrate simple, personalised pukapuka (books) for their tamariki. Over 6-8 weeks, you'll help bring these stories to life, culminating in a book launch event. This is a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of these men and their whanau, fostering a connection through storytelling.

This powerful programme has successfully run in Palmerston North for over a decade, and we are excited to now offer this at Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison. The programme aims to help fathers stay connected with their tamariki through the creation of pukapuka, which can serve as a meaningful way to share stories, values and aroha.

 Programme Overview:

  • You will work as part of a small team of volunteers, supporting fathers to create simple, illustrated pukapuka for their tamariki.
  • Sessions are approximately 2 hours and run once a week, for 6-8 weeks at a time.
  • Up to six fathers per programme.
  • Volunteers assist fathers in brainstorming, writing and illustrating pukapuka.

Pukapuka are printed and ‘published’ at the completion of the programme, and are launched at the final session, which is a celebration of the fathers’ mahi.
