We’re looking for people passionate about helping protect critically endangered Banded Dotterels nesting along the Clive/Waipureku coastline. These beautiful birds share our beaches with other native species such as Oystercatchers and Caspian Terns, all of which face increasing pressure.
Right now, protection efforts rely heavily on individual volunteers, with limited signage and virtually no cordoned nesting areas. We’re working to change that by building a more coordinated, community-led approach in partnership with councils and DOC.
As a volunteer, you may:
-
Monitor nesting areas and report activity
Install and maintain protective signage and simple barriers
Help educate beach visitors about nesting birds
Raise awareness of threats to shorebirds
Support local efforts to establish protected zones
Why It Matters
Dotterels and other shorebirds face serious risks from predators such as cats, stoats, hedgehogs, hawks, gulls as well as human activity; dogs off lead, walking over nests, ATVs and motorbikes.
Many people simply don’t know these birds exist—or how easily nests can be disturbed or destroyed. Your role will help protect vulnerable chicks and eggs and ensure these species survive in our region.
Cares for wildlife and local environment
Is Willing to spend time on the beach
Has good communication skills
Has the ability to work independently or as part of a small team
No prior experience needed—just a commitment to making a difference.
Join us and be part of a growing community effort to give Hawke’s Bay shorebirds a safer future. Together, we can create visible protection zones and promote respect for these precious species.
