Volunteering Excellence Awards 2025 Winner - St John First Response Team Porangahau

A Tribute to the Volunteers of the Pōrangahau First Response Unit

In the isolated rural township of Pōrangahau, a dedicated team of volunteers forms the heart of the Hato Hone St John First Response Unit. Among them are Marilyn Forrest, Lou Bird, Orlando MacDonald, supported by Tania Nicholas and Jacqui Gordon, along with all those who generously give their time, skills, and compassion to serve their community.

These remarkable individuals drop everything at a moment’s notice to respond to emergencies—whether it’s a cardiac arrest, asthma attack, anaphylaxis, farm accident, or vehicle crash. As the first on the scene, they provide critical care, assess the situation, and coordinate further help, often bridging the gap until professional medical services arrive from at least 40 minutes away.

Their courage, dedication, and kindness make a lasting impact on the lives of those they help.

The communities of Hawke's Bay offer their sincere appreciation to every volunteer of the Pōrangahau First Response Unit. Your service is invaluable, and your commitment does not go unnoticed. Thank you for being a vital part of our region’s wellbeing.
